HIP PAIN

Overview

Hip pain is common across all age groups and can severely impact mobility and quality of life. Various conditions affect the hip, ranging from sports injuries to degenerative changes as we age.

Common causes of hip pain include

  • femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)

  •  labral tears

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome.

Each condition has distinct characteristics and treatment approaches.

What causes it

FAI, where the hip bones rub abnormally, often causes pain in younger individuals, especially athletes. Osteoarthritis is prevalent in older adults due to cartilage wear, while greater trochanteric pain syndrome typically arises from tendon inflammation or tears.

What do you feel

Symptoms include groin pain (common in FAI and labral tears), lateral hip pain (trochanteric pain syndrome), stiffness, reduced range of motion, and in severe cases, joint instability. Morning stiffness often accompanies osteoarthritis.

When to See a Doctor

Consult a doctor if hip pain limits daily activities, causes significant discomfort, or does not improve with rest and over-the-counter pain relief.

Treatment Outline

Conservative treatments include physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and lifestyle adjustments. Severe cases may require steroid injections or surgery, especially for labral tears or advanced osteoarthritis.

Rehabilitation

Recovery focuses on restoring mobility and strengthening surrounding muscles. Physical therapy exercises like hip bridges and resistance training can support recovery.
